Another thing I learned is that aligning your tires can increase fuel efficiency by about 10%. Misaligned wheels can also lead to increased drag making the wheel roll slower and increased tire wear. Simple things like maintaining correct tire pressure and wheel alignment can surely save you a significant amount on gas.

At least in the U.S., the government does set fuel-efficiency standards. Over the years, those standards have increased as awareness about the air pollution and climate change impacts of burning gasoline have become apparent.
