Most of the time, we don’t need brand new gear – just supplies to help us outfit our rooms or apartments. Campuses could save kids so much money and protect the planet, too! Thanks for writing. Hope school is going well!

In today’s materialistic society it is difficult to realize that we actually need much less than we think we do.
Thanks for the insight into a parent’s point of view and demonstrating an example of how re-using and only buying essentials can work.

The Simplicity Movement wasn’t a movement and didn’t need to be when I went to school. Now, with the consumerism of the last decade waning, I’m so glad that we’re all looking a little harder at what we need versus what we want!

Like the TV example. I refused to buy it for my daughter, and she decided she didn’t “need” it after all. Another point: for a long time, we didn’t let our kids watch much tv. Their “needs” seemed relatively contained. As for myself, I find that, at this point, my needs are pretty modest. It’s a relief to come to that realization.

Right now I have a hankering for a new pair of shoes, my old ones will still do – they are beat to pete, totally look like they are on their last leg, yet for walking the dog they do fine – it’s when i forget to switch them and am elsewhere and I say to myself I really NEED some new shoes
I still have my towel from college – it’s 30 yrs old, buy good linen and goodness it lasts forever !
You and I have similar age children Diane, you shared their realities nicely in this post.
It’s an intense time of year – isn’t it ?
I have a great keeping your college kid healthy sheet if you ever need something like that – I am happy to send it on over
