It’s one thing to say you want to be “eco friendly.” It’s quite another to put your money where your mouth is and spend real dollars on greener products and services, especially in these days of tight budgets and an uncertain economy.

Yet that’s exactly what Bonnie C., a 26-year old resident of Washington, D.C., has done. Bonnie is single, lives in an apartment, and works for the U.S. Government. Here’s her story:

“I read a blog post of yours last year encouraging readers to redirect $1000 in spending to green purchases.  This really struck me, and I decided to try it.  I hit $1000 in December when I installed my own programmable thermostat.  Here’s how I did it:

BONNIE’S BIG GREEN SHIFTS

Used furniture (sofa, dining table, patio table, TV, TV cabinet): $340, but the TV and cabinet were free!

 Used Bike: $250

Garden Plot, tools, soil: $200

Organic Food: $75

Glass food containers: $40

Organic Body Products: $5 (but I’ve only run out of toothpaste, so I expect this number to grow)

No VOC Paint: $40

CFL Lightbulbs: $20

Green Cleaning Products: $25

Programmable Thermostat: $34

Total: $1029

Even though I live in an apartment, I installed the thermostat and painted – I’ll change them back when I move out.

I think it’s also interesting to note that most of these purchases saved me money.  I’m 26, and I don’t have a large budget to reallocate, but by buying used items, I must have saved hundreds.  The lightbulbs and thermostat will save me money, AND I don’t have to get out of bed in a cold house!  I also bought a fuel-efficient Honda Fit that gets about 34 mpg on average for my typical commute, but 37-38 on long road trips.

This year I’m planning to shift more spending towards food and beauty products.  I’m also trying to get a roommate, which will not only cut down on expenses, but house 2 people using about the same energy as 1.

Most of these were really easy changes, but I’m still getting over sticker shock of organic food and beauty products.

Changing out the thermostat was surprisingly easy.  Yes, there were tons of poorly labeled wires, but we followed the directions carefully and it only took about 30 minutes.

Next I’m looking for a roommate!  I’m also going to try to get into composting.  And I’ll keep migrating to better food and beauty products.”

Bonnie’s also going to keep working on her boyfriend, who was helpful if skeptical“He was reluctant at first,” she says, “but had a positive view after we finished those projects (installing the thermostat and setting up the garden plot).”  I’m still trying to get him into better toiletries and food, but he was a quick sell on green cleaning products!”

Thanks for blogging and motivating me!”
Bonnie

As Bonnie knows, every dollar you shift makes a difference. The way you spend your money is your first line of defense against products that contain toxic ingredients or waste energy. Just as importantly, buying “green” encourages companies to reduce pollution and use water and other natural resources with greater care. Plus, choosing more environmental options often saves you money immediately. For all these reasons, the Big Green Purse One in a Million campaign inspires people to set a goal of shifting at least $1,000 of money they’d spend anyway on the most environmentally-friendly products available.

Thousands of people have already committed to shifting their spending. Why don’t you? You can sign up here.

Erin Peters knows a thing or two about “green” shopping.

The stay-at-home mother of three young boys lives with her family in Raleigh, North Carolina. She writes The Conscious Shopper blog, where her motto is “Go Green. Live Better. Save Money.” She’s also the newest member of our One in a Million campaign, joining almost 5,000 other folks who have shifted at least $1,000 of their household budgets to the greenest products and services available.

One thousand dollars sounds like a lot of money. But since we’re talking about shifting our spending, rather than adding to what we already spend, it’s something most of us can afford. Plus, if a million people do it, we could send a message worth a billion dollars to manufacturers that we want them to make our health and the environment a priority.  Here’s how Erin made the shift:

Every month I spend about $600 on local and/or organic groceries for my family of five. Over the past year, I’ve also spent:

$400 on a winter CSA membership
$60 on Charlie’s Soap laundry detergent
$54 on Seventh Generation dishwasher detergent and dish soap
$16 on recycled paper towels
$10 on trash bags made with recycled content
$45 on recycled toilet paper
$72 on Tom’s of Maine toothpaste
$30 on Preserve toothbrushes
$60 on organic make-up
$7 on Crystal deodorant
$173 on thrift store clothing and Simple Shoes
$27 to set up a worm bin
$52 on recycled printer paper

$1606 – Total

Erin’s shifts did not happen overnight.

“For a long time, I had a misconception that living green was expensive and therefore out of reach for my family,” she said. “Then one day, I got frustrated with the feeling that I was buying inferior and unhealthy products and that I wasn’t spending my money in accordance with my values. I decided just to go for it and see if I could buy organic, non-toxic, and fair trade products without blowing my family’s budget.

“At that time, our budget was extremely tight, but I found that by living more frugally and doing the green things that save money, I was able to shift our savings to our food and clothing budget. Without affecting our overall budget at all, I was able to go green!”

Erin said some shifts were pretty easy. “I love buying fresh foods from the farmer’s market and through our CSA. I love that my family is eating healthier, but I also enjoy meeting the farmers and hearing their passion. Knowing where our food comes from is such a wonderful feeling,” she says.

But there are still some challenges – like clothing. “In my past life,” Erin admits, “I was a Target-clothing addict. I’ve learned to enjoy thrift store shopping, but there are some items (like shoes) that I prefer to buy new and the price difference of eco-friendly clothing versus Target clothing is a hard one for me. Mostly, I get over that hurdle by not going to Target. Out of sight, out of mind.”

Erin is taking what she’s learned as a green budget shifter and launched a campaign to encourage others  to make small behavior changes, too. It’s called The Conscious Shopper Challenge, and it provides weekly goals to help people go green in a year without spending a lot of money. “We start with “trimming your waste-line” (reducing your trash production), then we work on energy, water, transportation, shopping, food, and finally looking “beyond your front door,” explains Erin.

“I think a lot of people have the same misconception that I used to have: that going green means big expensive changes like buying a new car or putting solar panels on the roof. But I’ve learned that there are so many small things each individual can do, and those small things add up to make a big difference.

“I hope The Conscious Shopper Challenge will show people how easy and affordable it can be to go green while providing a strong supportive community to go green with. But beyond that, I hope people will feel inspired to be conscious shoppers, aware of how their decisions in the marketplace affect other people and the planet.”

If you’re looking for ways to live a greener life, take some pointers from Fran Martin.

Fran is the newest member of the One in a Million campaign, a feat she achieved by switching more than $1,000 of her household budget to products and services that offer the greatest environmental benefit. The campaign doesn’t ask people to spend MORE money. Instead, it encourages consumers to throw their marketplace clout behind non-toxic, eco-friendly alternatives that often end up saving people more money in the long run.

Who is Fran?

Fran, who is married, 67, and the mother of grown children, has lived in Butler, PA for the past 43 years. Her husband trains and breeds Labrador retrievers; “We have two,” she says. Fran is retired, but works part-time conducting food demonstrations where “I really push the organic products whether it is my demo of the day or not.”

“At home I am an avid cook – everything from scratch,” says the One in a Million devotee.  “After the Women for a Healthy Environment conference last year, and after reading Omnivore’s Dilemma, I extended my organic garden and got two hens so I could have organic eggs.  I erected a hoop house in October to have a winter garden which proved to be quite successful.  The only red meat we eat is venison, and I can and freeze everything possible.”

“I also made homemade mouthwash and fabric softner,” she said.

How did she shift $1,000?

Here are the actual eco budget shifts Fran made between October 2008 and December 2009:

Organic Grains, Beans – $40
Organic Coffee – $208
Organic Dairy – $155
Organic Nuts –  $52
Organic Pasta – $21
Household Products (like eco-safe laundry detergent, dish soap, and cleaning soap) – $115
Nontoxic Health/Beauty Products – $66
Organic Chicken Feed – $26
Beverages – $23
Soymilk (2 cases) – $25
Meats/Fish – $123
Snacks – $8
Veg/Fruit – $90
Organic garden fertilizer and soil amendments: $75
Stopped using clothes dryer almost completely: undetermined energy savings

Total: at least $1,025

Why?

When I asked Fran why she made the shifts, here’s what she said:

* What inspired you to join the One in a Million campaign? I attended the Women’s Health and the Environment Conference in Pittsburg and heard you describe the difference we can make based on how we spend our money. I thought, “I can do that.”

* What change was unexpectedly easy to make? Keeping track of my purchases!

* What proved to be most challenging? Finding the best prices (ed. Note: This is true for many people, but a little bargain shopping can make organic food and recycled products very affordable)’

* What’s your next step? Continue to purchase present organic products and add new ones as I find them.

Great job, Fran! Thanks for sharing your success with us.

Subee If you’re one of those people who want to “go green” but think they can’t afford it, meet Sue H. of Dewitt, Virginia.

This “One in a Million” grandmother of two has found that shifting her spending to products and services that offer the greatest environmental benefit actually saves her money – especially when it comes to energy.

The One in a Million campaign inspires consumers to shift at least $1,000 of their existing household budgets to greener goods. The idea isn’t to spend more money, just to make “green” a priority when you do shop. In many cases, the new purchases are not only better for the planet. They’re great for your pocketbook, too.

Here’s how Sue shifted her spending:

04/’07:  Bought an ’07 Honda Civic                     $17,500
04/’07  Bought a front loading washer                 $  1,000
’06 thru ’08:  cfl bulbs, 50                                  $     200
01/’07:  Installed water htr blanket                      $      20
01/’08:  Put up weather stripping                        $      10
01/’08:  Hung 8 pr. thermal drapes                      $    500
05/’08:  Bamboo flooring in bathroom                  $    400

Total:                                                              $19,130

Sue says she’s “pretty much a typical 60ish woman” with three grown children, two grown step-children, and seven grandchildren. Retired, she sews, does some crafting, reads and gardens. When I asked Sue what inspired her, here’s what she said.

“The green thing?  It really began for me in the 70’s when we planted our first garden.  I started getting “Organic Gardening” and that got me even more interested.  Then there were a number of years when I really let stuff slide.  I was divorced in 1979, with two kids, and working for the first time in my life.

I’ve gotten more interested and active in our environment over the years since I had to retire.  It began with supporting various charities that espouse what I think is important.  I’ve browbeaten most of my family about it.  My mother, who lives with my older sister, began recycling about 3 months ago.  Same deal with my daughter and her family.  My husband has been hard to persuade, too, and I frequently go through the “trash” can in the kitchen to fish out stuff that goes in the recycle can.  But, we’re getting there.  In the last few years, I’ve even convinced him to give up the 10-10-10 fertilizer we’d been using on the garden.  We’ve gone organic with that, as well as using Neem oil for the bad bugs instead of Sevin spray.

The hardest part for me has been to actually DO it instead of just bitching about how Earth is changing, and placing blame with politicos and big business and the oil companies.  Oh, they are culprits, but so am I.  The easiest was the cfl bulbs.  That’s something that anyone can do.  Do it one at the time or one room at the time.  By the way, my monthly budget electric bill has come down from $152 to $116.  That’s over $400 a year.  For some people, that’s the final shot in the arm.  That money thing will get people nearly every time.

I know I can’t do much, but I truly believe if everyone would do just ONE thing, the world we live in would get better pdq!

P.S.  I’ve gotten my two four & 1/2 year old granddaughters each a copy of “Michael Recycle” for Christmas this year.”

If Sue can do it, so can you! Shifting your spending not only saves you money – it gives manufacturers an incentive to reduce pollution, keep air and water clean, and protect our world for our kids and grandkids. Why don’t you join us today? It couldn’t be easier!

Meet more One in a Million women.

HoneyLynn, a soon-to-be-mother who joined the Big Green Purse campaign back in March, has shifted almost $2,000 of her household spending to products and services that benefit the environment as part of her commitment to live a greener life. Here’s her story:

Honey Summer 2008  “Over the last 4-5 years, I have really become committed to environmentally conscious living, but have realized that it doesn’t and can’t on a practical level, happen overnight. So, slowly I have shifted our household’s spending to more environmentally conscious products. Whenever I need to replace or or buy something new, I take the time to seek out environmentally friendly alternatives, and if it costs a little more than I thought and we don’t need it right away, then I save up to make the purchase (no credit card purchases here).

“The idea of seeing exactly how much of our household spending was directed to environmentally friendly products, was what inspired me to get involved in the One in a Million campaign. Regarding the biggest lesson, like I mentioned above, is that sometimes it takes a little research (thank goodness for the Internet) to find environmentally friendly alternatives, but it is worth it. Also, those skeptical partners out there eventually come around. My husband half-jokingly gives me a hard time about being an Eco-nut, but over the last four+ years, I have noticed that when he does the shopping by himself, our reusable shopping bags are filled with the organic groceries and Eco-friendly products that we have become accustom to purchasing. It has become a part of our lifestyle.

“We live in Mankato, MN which is in south central MN, so sometimes it is difficult to find the products that we are looking for locally, so I will order on line when necessary. We just bought our first house this past July and have committed to using Eco-friendly products and services as we make the place our own. We don’t have any pets, but we are expecting our first child in April and our close friends and family already expect that our child will be one of the ‘greenest’ around.

“Most definitely I will continue to shift our spending!”

One_in_a_million HoneyLynn became “One in a Million” when she pledged to shift at least $1,000 of her household budget to more eco-friendly products and services. The idea is not to spend more money. Rather, the campaign inspires consumers to swap out conventional products for ones that are greener and cleaner. If a million women make the shift, we’ll create a billion-dollar incentive for manufacturers to “go green.” Already, thousands of women have joined the campaign.

If you’re interested, visit Big Green Purse online and download a balance sheet to help you keep track of your budget shifts. When you reach (or exceed) your $1,000 pledge, email us your story, and we’ll post it, just like HoneyLynn’s.

Globe_money Parents can save oodles of money by taking an “eco cheap” approach to back-to-school shopping.

Where to start?

* Ignore the huge supply lists that come home in kids’ backpacks. Over at the blog Green Talk, “Thrifty is the New Green for Back to School Supplies” reminds parents to check their “voluminous” stashes of pens, pencils, crayons and paper leftover from last year before buying new. SAVINGS:  $25-$50/child

*  Use last year’s backpacks and lunch boxes. (Mindful Momma notes in “The Price We Pay for Back 2School Cool that kids do just fine with gear they’ve used before.) SAVINGS:  $50-$125/child, depending on backpack.

*  Shop yard sales and thrift stores for back-to-school clothes. SAVINGS:  $100 – $250/child, depending on your usual clothes budget.

* Borrow sports equipment and rent musical instruments. Is your daughter trying hockey for the first time? Not sure if your son is a budding violinist or just likes to hear the bow scratch? Borrow skates or rent the violin until you’re sure a purchase makes sense. SAVINGS:  $50 – $250.

Total Savings: $225 – $675 per child.

For anyone out there who wonders how your shopping dollars can help protect the environment, look no further than Kat Schon. The co-owner of a small business in Portland, Oregon, Kat has shifted not just one, but thousands of dollars into products that help protect the planet. And she’s done it at work as well as at home.

Kat_with_flowers_2Simply what Kat does at her company, Portland Store Fixtures, could qualify her for star status in the Big Green Purse “One in a Million” campaign, our effort to engage a million women in shifting $1,000 of their household budget to more eco-friendly options. Portland Store Fixtures sells new and used fixtures for anyone interested in running a retail establishment. The company’s mantra is:

“Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Give those “experienced” fixtures a chance to shine.”

Kat and her partner Penney are always on the look-out for gently worn display cases, fabrics, and even mannequins that another proprietor can put to good re-use. Since 1998, they’ve helped hundreds of stores get up and running, often by using recycled materials.

To keep her staff of seven fueled, Kat has organized a weekly organic food delivery to the office. “We signed on with a company called SPUD that efficiently delivers food and allows us to pick what foods we will receive every week.  We pick organic, locally grown fruit and vegetables because it keeps the dollar local and out of the gas tank.”

Plus, says Kat, “We shop organically and have done so for the last two years.  We also buy (personally and for the business) non-toxic cleaners, recycled products and reuse everything!  We sell used store fixtures so we really take the “reuse” part seriously.  Our invoices, letters and faxes are all on already printed on one side paper.  And then we will use them for scrap paper!”

Kat estimates she’s shifted $28 per week for the local organic food delivery, and $200 per week for more eco-friendly grocery and cleaning products.

But the purchase that really propelled her into the “One in a Million” pantheon?

She recently bought a $22,000 Prius, the gas-saving hybrid car that can get as much as 50 miles out of every gallon of gas.

Thumb_green Thumbs up, Kat! You’re really One in a Million!

Burning_money_2  Presumably, you’re not the kind of person who would take a big pile of money out to your driveway and set it on fire, just to watch it burn. But when you burn gasoline, that’s essentially what you’re doing. And with gasoline prices now bouncing around $4 a gallon, that pile of money you’re burning is getting a whole lot bigger.

Big Green Purse lists ten ways you can conserve gas today and save at least $20-$50 every month at the pump. But you can save even more by taking the Drive Smarter Challenge, a new initiative from the Alliance to Save Energy.

Promochallenge What’s terrific about the Challenge is that it puts you in the driver’s seat — literally. The website simulates you driving, then suggests up to six fuel-efficiency actions you can easily take. If you do (or say you plan to), the website immediately calculates your savings in money, gasoline, and greenhouse gas emissions.

I took the challenge as if I were driving my son’s 2001, 6hp Toyota Avalon. By the end of my “road test,” I was informed I could save $433  (about 110 gallons of gasoline at the $4/gallon price, for almost 10 weeks of free gas) if I followed six simple recommendations like pumping up my tires and lightening the load in my trunk.

Plus, when I forwarded the site to a friend, I got a coupon for $10 off a Bosch Oxygen Sensor, which will help my engine run even more efficiently.

Beware: the website takes a longish time to load (at least on Explorer 6.0) and seems to re-load every time you switch screens. But those inconveniences are well worth the cost-savings you’ll enjoy if you take the Challenge.

Thumb_green Thumbs up to the Alliance to Save Energy for giving us this ingenious tool!

By the way, you can credit gas savings to your One in a Million balance sheet.

Picture_001_2 The “One in a Million” Campaign is urging a million women to shift $1,000 of money they’d spend in a year anyway to green products and services that can help protect the environment. Women are finding all kinds of ways to swap out “brown” products for “green.”

Erin just sent the balance sheet she downloaded from the Big Green Purse website to help her keep track of her purchases and report  back on her pledge. It only took her six months to become “One in a Million.” Her secret? She bought two water saving toilets for a total of almost $600, then made up the difference in organic groceries, safe cleansers, and organic potting soil.

Take a look at Erin’s shopping list. Does it give you any ideas how  you can swap your current purchases for green ones that would make a difference?

If you haven’t signed up to be One in a Million yet, join us today.

If you’re part of the movement, let us know how your campaign is going. We’d love to feature you  – just send a photo and your balance sheet.
