Trustworthy Climate Change News Sources

What — and who — can you believe on climate change? Where should you get your facts? Here are 5 trustworthy climate change news sources I use because they’re based on facts and scientific research, not politics, conjecture or a desire to deceive the public for personal gain.

Note: I originally compiled this list for Moms Clean Air Force, which I also list as a go-to site for factual info on climate change.

1. The Weather Channel – The Weather Channel’s meteorologists are grounded in comprehensive climate science. They do a particularly good job of connecting the dots between extreme weather patterns and climate change by using short, effective videos and easy-to-understand explanations. For example, one recent story tackled the following question: “What do Florida and Alaska Have in Common? They’re Both Weirdly Warm Right Now.”

Notable Clip: Meteorologist Kait Parker called out a fake news story on Brietbart, saying “Brietbart Misleads Americans on Climate Change.” Watching it will make you cheer

2. The Guardian – This news outlet is based in the United Kingdom but that sure doesn’t stop it from covering how the U.S. and  the rest of the world are addressing climate change. The Guardian offers straight news reporting on topics as wide ranging as how climate change is affecting our fisheries and forests and the role climate change is playing in increasing droughts, floods and storms.

Notable Story: Evidently, some people don’t think the future king of England should weigh in on a phenomenon that could swamp his island nation. After Britain’s Prince Charles and two co-authors wrote  a book on climate change “intended as a plain English guide,” the Prince took some heat because he did not “keep his mouth shut,” as The Daily Mail put it. The Guardian printed a defense of Prince Charles’ activism that reminded the public that his royal duties include “the right to warn.”

3. Climate Central – ClimateCentral.org is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit organization of scientists and journalists dedicated to researching and reporting not just the facts about the changing climate, but its impact on the public as well. Their values include “scientific and journalistic integrity,” vowing to report the scientific facts of climate change “however they fall.” They acknowledge that “democracy calls for an informed public” and believe that scientific facts “support a healthy public debate.” During Trump’s first 100 days, “Climate Central is going  to underscore the value of science and rational approaches to policy making” and promises to tweet “facts, stories and videos that provide key scientific context of the choices humanity faces and what policy actions (or inactions) mean.”

Notable Story: “Women Are the True Face of Climate Change,” an analysis of the impact climate change is having on women’s health, safety, and even survival.

4. The Daily Climate – This non-partisan and independent media organization works to increase public understanding of climate change, including its scope and scale, potential solutions and the political processes that affect it. They do so by aggregating news stories from all over the world as well as from daily and online media outlets and weekly or monthly news magazines. Among their sources are English language newspapers with international audiences like the New York Times and the Jakarta Post; major newswires like the Associated Press and Agence France-Presse, and scientific journals like Science and Nature. If you’re curious about how a climate story is being covered beyond your community, or what climate issues are generating news in other parts of the world, The Daily Climate can provide the roadmap.

Notable Story: “21 kids stand in the way of Trump’s attempts to delete federal climate websites,” first reported on Mashable.com, that details the lawsuit filed by a group ranging in age from 9 to 20 against the federal government and fossil fuel companies to hold them accountable for “failing to adequately address human-caused global warming despite widespread knowledge of the risks.”

Kids suing the government to stop climate change? Not #fakenews!

5. Moms Clean Air Force Website – It should go without saying that Moms Clean Air Force will never, ever dispense fake news or alternative facts. To the contrary, the organization has compiled a bank of science-based resources on everything from “How Climate Change Affects Asthma” to “Climate Change Hits Home” to “Climate Change & Children’s Health.” Moms… consistently reports scientific updates on the climate science and interviews experts including atmospheric scientists, elected officials, and university researchers about the impacts that climate change and pollution are having on us and our communities.

One million moms have put their trust in Moms Clean Air Force by subscribing to their updates and action alerts.

Everyone has their own reason for joining the Women’s March on Washington.

My reasons are pretty simple – but they matter to me.

√ I want to demonstrate with my physical presence that I oppose the hateful rhetoric and destructive intention of the new administration to dismantle the laws that
protect our health and the health of the planet.

√ I want to stand up for the progress we’ve made on protecting our environment.

√ Especially, I want to affirm my commitment to stopping climate change
and reducing pollution.

The new president and his nominee to head the Environmental Protection Agency intend to roll back the progress we’ve made reducing our use of the fossil fuels that cause climate change.

They show no interest in safeguarding the air we breathe and the water we drink.

Shielding our bodies from exposure to toxic chemicals is not a priority for them.

It is for me, and I want my presence at the Women’s March on Washington, D.C. to make that clear.

But perhaps most of all, I’ll be at the Women’s March on Washington because I know that I can’t fight the battles that need to be fought – and won – alone.

Being surrounded by 500,000 other concerned citizens who also agree that we need to protect ourselves and our world will give me the virtual shot in the arm I need to do the work that lies ahead.

How do I know?

Last week, I was on Capitol Hill with Moms Clean Air Force meeting with Senate staffers about the EPA nominee. After two months of post-election blues, it felt great to be working with smart, passionate, and committed people who share a common vision for a better, safer, healthier, cleaner world.

Vote No on Scott Pruitt

For the first time since the election, I felt like “I can do this. I can get up every day and do something that makes a difference.”

That feeling of hope, and empowerment, and ENERGY came from being with others who feel the same way and who are also taking action!

That’s the feeling I expect to get in spades during the Women’s March on Washington. It will be like taking a great big psychic vitamin – only more empowering, more sustaining, and probably a lot more fun!

If you’ll be at the March in Washington, maybe I’ll see you there. I hope so.

But you don’t need to be in D.C. to march. Similar events are happening all over the United States, and around the world, too. Go to WomensMarch.com to find a march you can join.

Remember: As we said over and over during the presidential campaign, we are stronger together. The March is just the beginning of that show of strength – not the end.

Climate change may be happening, but we can stop it!

climate rally That was the message loud and clear at the climate rally held yesterday in Washington, D.C., delivered by the 40,000 or more people who congregated around the Washington Monument before marching to the White House in the largest climate-focused rally in history.

Though the weather was absolutely frigid, the crowd could not have been more fired up. Parents and kids, students and seniors, people of all races and religions came together to demonstrate their love for the environment, their concern for their families and their communities, and their commitment to a cleaner, greener world.

The biggest focus was on President Obama, who made climate change a top priority in his recent State of the Union Address and who must decide whether or not to greenlight the controversial Keystone Pipeline, which would carry oil from Canada, across the U.S. to the Gulf of Mexico. Former White House green jobs advisor Van Jones told the audience from the state, “This will define your legacy, Mr. President.” Indeed, it will.

Polar bears best I marched with the Alaska Wilderness League, a terrific organization that’s been leading the fight to keep oil drilling out of America’s Arctic Wildlife Refuge for more than 15 years. AWL staffers dressed like polar bears carried signs reading Save the Arctic as we chanted, “What do we want? Polar Bears! What do they need? Ice!”

Moms and dads brought their children to the rally to demonstrate the impact that climate change is having on our families. In many parts of the world, poison ivy has gotten much worse because hotter than normal temperatures have created such ideal growing conditions for this noxious plant. Moms Clean Air Force was there, too, reminding us that the same fossil fuels that cause climate change are polluting our air, a big reason why so many more kids are suffering from asthma these days.

Moms KidsSpeaking of kids, they were everywhere at the rally: on their dad’s shoulders, getting their pictures taken with the polar bears, clapping their hands in time to the music. It was great to see so many college students, too. In fact, they’re the ones who led the “Yes, We Can!” chant when one of the stage speakers asked, “Can we stop climate change?”

Thousands of people traveled from far and wide to lend their voices to the rally crowd. When I boarded my local subway to get down to the event, the car was brimming with folks from as far away as Texas and Oklahoma, two states that are directly in the path of the Keystone Pipeline. At the Washington Monument, a woman from my home state of Michigan sported a big cut-out poster to remind us that an oil leak into an important river in the northern part of that state still had not been cleaned up. Meanwhile, rallies were happening in many other cities in the U.S., too. Mary Clare Hunt was among the 2,000 or more who turned up in Los Angeles to say “not” to climate change. You can read her report here.

After rousing speeches at the Monument and much cheering, the massive crowd headed toward the White House. The point of this, afterall, was to persuade President Obama to make good on his pledge to bring climate change to a halt.

But I couldn’t help but feel like a bigger point had been made, too. We live in a democracy, and we have the right to exercise our free speech, assemble for peaceful protest, and determine our own future. That future, and the future of our children, grand children, and great-grandchildren, is very much at stake as we determine not just whether, but how to stop climate change. Peaceful rallies like this one show elected officials, corporations, and other citizens that we take our right to democracy seriously — and so should they.
